about

Recorded over a period of 11 years, unheld by dmf, is Sop of bands Woolf, Score, Child's Pose and Roseanne Barrr. Eschewing for the most part the punk aggression of Score or Woolf, or even the ramshackle pop of Child's Pose, unheld is a compelling journey backwards through an artist's development. The tape moves from Jane Arden Song, a collage of phrases building hypnotically, breaking to a cover of American country singer and songwriter Cindy Walker that strips back the languorous flow of the original into a more sinister, starker piece, set against an ambient pulse and the crackle of broken strings. dmf seems to be about about the space in between, the things that fester or thrive there, the palimpsest of a life's story wound and rewound, faded and repainted, the trails of action spiralling out into their echoes, a half-thought word that rises into prominence in the emptiness. By the time it moves through the anxious guitar clatters of Crime of Kissing into the guttural uneasiness of Nothing to Show Here's throbbing synth you can find yourself opened up in a way, carried somewhere not far from here, but not a place you might have found on your own.
